Respite is when the person who usually cares for you takes a break and someone else provides that care. There are many difference types of planned and emergency respite available, depending on your needs.
The Studdy MS Centre - Residential Unit at Lidcombe in Sydney is a facility operated by MS Australia - ACT/ NSW/VIC. The unit provides long term accommodation and short term respite for people with MS. Sixteen private rooms are available, eight for long term accommodation and eight for respite clients. Two lounge areas equipped with widescreen televisions, DVD player and Foxtel are available. Computer facilities with broadband Internet are provided free of charge and a volunteer available on request for those who require assistance with using computers.
A full recreation program is available with group and individual outings including restaurants, the movies and shopping. Activities in the unit include massage, art groups, movies and more. Residents, respite clients and guests have access to a shaded court yard and wheelchair accessible garden.
All meals are cooked fresh with a menu available daily with special dietary requirements catered for. Meals are served in the dining room. A cappuccino machine is provided and tea and coffee making facilities are available in both of the lounge areas.
Applications for long term need to be placed directly with NSW Human Services: Aging, Disability and Homecare (ADHC). Applications can be made at any time. When a place becomes available all applicants are assessed according to their need and the ability of the Residential Unit to meet that need. Flexirest provides respite, or a short break, for family and unpaid carers of registered clients. Through funding, we provide a range of services that offer either in or out of home care that other community and respite services cannot provide.

FlexiRest is only available to residents of NSW who have an unpaid carer. Residents of ACT or Victoria should contact MS Connect to discuss other options for flexible respite.
