Immunotherapy Support Program
What is immunotherapy?
The term immunotherapy refers to a treatment that stimulates or modifies the body's immune response. Current disease modifying medications approved for use in multiple sclerosis - Betaferon®, Avonex®, Copaxone® and Rebif® and Tysabri®. Immunotherapy medications may be prescribed by your neurologist or general practitioner (GP) and are usually administered by self-injection or infusion in the case of Tysabri®.
Immunotherapy Support Program
MS Australia - ACT/NSW/VIC has a comprehensive, statewide Immunotherapy Support Program. A team of highly experienced Specialist Nurses is available to provide:
- Information on immunotherapy medications.
- Access to education and training in injection techniques for people commencing a medication.
- Advice on how to manage any side effects of the medication.
- Follow-up support in the ongoing management of the medication.
- Resources on other medications used in the management of MS.
Educating health professionals
MS Australia - ACT/NSW/VIC also offers information packages, training and consultation to community nurses and other health professionals, to ensure that people with MS living in remote and rural areas have access to education in injection techniques and long-term local support.
How to access the Immunotherapy Support Program
- Your neurologist or GP may refer you to the Immunotherapy Support Program.
- You can contact the MS Connect™ 1800 042 138 telephone service to speak to a Specialist Nurse and to arrange training in injection techniques.
- MS Connect™ health professionals can also discuss your individual needs and offer specialist advice on symptom management and lifestyle issues.
