Immunotherapy refers to any treatment that is designed to alter the immune system. Different types of immunotherapy medications (also referred to as disease-modifying therapies) are used to treat a wide range of diseases, including multiple sclerosis (MS). Immunotherapy medications currently approved to treat MS in Australia include:
These immunotherapy medications work by adjusting the body’s immune response. Large clinical trials have shown that these treatments can reduce the rate and severity of MS relapse (exacerbation) and disease progression. There is also growing evidence that immunotherapy is more effective the earlier treatment begins. The usage, benefits and side effects of these treatments vary and, as such, your neurologist is the best person to advise which immunotherapy medication will be most suitable for you.
A number of other immunotherapy medications are also in the final stages of clinical trials.
MS Australia - ACT/NSW/VIC also offers information packages, training and consultation to community nurses and other health professionals, to ensure that people with MS living in remote and rural areas have access to education in injection techniques and long-term local support.
