Maximising your Strength
Maximising your Strength classes have been set up in the community in partnership with MS Australia and Personal Fitness Trainers. They are small group personal fitness training classes with a qualified and accredited Personal Fitness Trainer where the cost is shared by the group. These programs have been piloted following a small research project completed by the MS Australia - ACT/ NSW/VIC Physiotherapy Department and La Trobe University. The results of which showed definite benefits for people with MS who participate in strength and resistance training.
The first pilot program of Maximising your Strength was established in Blackburn at McAllisters Fitness Training with Danny, it has proved so popular that the model has been replicated. Please note that programs which do not attract sufficient numbers will naturally be discontinued and they are run by the personal fitness trainers not MS Australia . If you are interested in attending please contact the Personal Fitness Trainer directly to join in. If you believe you may need an assessment by a physiotherapist please contact the Lifestyle Planning Service.
Aqua Classes (SWEAT)
Aqua classes have been extremely popular amongst people living with MS for many years. The classes are scattered across many areas of Victoria. Some people with MS feel that the buoyancy of the water enables them to move freely and do more than they could accomplish on land. The classes are designed to improve strength, endurance, core strength and balance.
Yoga
A system of exercises which help your control of the body and mind. It also improves your breathing and focuses the alignment of your body. Yoga is a posturing and breathing technique to induce relaxation. Usually taught as a sequence of poses and breath exercises.
The spine nourishes the central nervous system and the condition of the spine is critical for our physical and emotional well being. Yoga postures exercise the spine and stimulate the lymphatic system, helping to remove toxins from the body, which, if allowed to accumulate, may cause pain and stiffness in the muscles and joints.
Myotherapy
Myotherapy is one of the multi-skilled physical therapies within the Allied Health Profession. Myotherapists assess and physically treat myofascial pain, injury and dysfunction affecting movement and mobility. Myotherapy is applied in the preventative, corrective and rehabilitative phases of therapy to restore and maintain the normal integrity of the soft tissue structure (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia) of the human body.
If you have MS and suffer from pain or dysfunction that may be caused by muscles or fascia you should make an appointment to see a Myotherapist:
